Giant is a perfect description of this movie. We have Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Now there is a cast of the century! Rock Hudson is tough but so is James Dean and the two don't get along. I loved every minute of this movie and even have a copy of the movie poster hanging in my house. I told you, I LIKE THIS MOVIE?

I doubt this movie would have the status it does if it weren't James Dean's last movie. He died in a car crash shortly before filming ended and this is the third of the three films he made. Based on Edna Ferber's novel, "Giant" lives up to its name; it's a sprawling, somewhat unwieldy saga of a Texas cattle family torn between their agrarian past and the oil-rich future. Coming in at 3 hours and change, it's a bit too long and slow in part. That said, it has three iconic actors as the leads, some great use of the Texas landscape (I"m sure it would look better on the big screen) and some still relevant themes. Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean are all good in their roles, although it's odd to see them age, especially Dean, playing a character older than he would ever live to be. His transformation into a drunken, arrogant millionaire (with shades of Howard Hughes) is not terribly convincing. Dennis Hopper and Sal Mineo have small parts and they were also with Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause." The ending is kinda stupid. Directed by George Stevens, who also did "A Place in the Sun" and "Shane."

Don't forget to flip the DVD over and watch the 2nd half of the film! Obviously this is dated, but I liked it, even though something awful happens to the horse. The characters grow up to be better, more humane people.

An overly long, plodding movie with little to recommend it.

George Steven's grandest epic!
